Flying defibrillator drone increases heart attack survival rate by 80%

Technology can be used in many ways to save the lives of trauma victims. We are only just beginning to see how new innovations are being derived from using hybrid technologies to create powerful tools to save lives.

This latest video (video of the flying defibrillator) shows how young Dutch tech-savvy inventors have revealed a prototype ‘ambulance drone’… a flying defibrillator.

This new drone can can fly at speeds up to 100 kilometres per hour. With on-board cameras and 4G network connections it tracks emergency mobile calls using GPS to navigate it’s way to the victim’s location.

In a real life scenario, let;s just say an ambulance took 10 minutes to get to a patient who has suffered a cardiac arrest, the chance of survival is only 8%. However, using the drone with on-board defibrillator, a patient can be reached within 60 seconds if that patient is within 12 km sq zone of the drone’s location, increasing the patient survival to an impressive 80%.

Once the drone has reached the location, a highly trained paramedic operator, can overview the scene by using the built-in cameras which are connected to a main control room. The operator can talk to others who are attending the scene and instruct them on how to apply the defibrillator pads and set up the device.

When cardiac arrest victims have mere seconds to live, this type of innovation will save lives. Just another reason why being a paramedic can be a fascinating and rewarding career.
