Become a Paramedic | Paramedic Pathways

So you want to become a paramedic?

Are you drawn to helping people? Become a paramedic!

Do you want a job where every day is different? Become a paramedic!

Do you want to be there for people in their most vulnerable moments? Become a paramedic!

To become a Paramedic in Australia with a State Ambulance Service, you are required to complete a bachelor’s degree. Upon completion of a Bachelor of Paramedical Science (or equivalent), you can obtain registration with AHPRA to become a Registered Paramedic.

“But I don’t have the right grades to get into University!”

Entry into a bachelor’s degree in paramedicine requires a high ATAR or ranking score. Many people do not have high enough scores, or simply do not have an ATAR. And for some, it’s just been a while since they’ve studied.

In which case, you may be required to first complete a bridging course, which will “bridge the gap” in your knowledge. Completion of a related course in the pre-hospital emergency health care industry will demonstrate your skills, knowledge and abilities, allowing for easier entry into university.

Subject credits.

By using the Diploma as a pathway into university, you may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and be credited for some subjects in your degree.

Every university is different, and the number of credited subjects is up to the discretion of your chosen university, so it’s best to consult directly with them.

Here are what some of our graduates have said:

  • “ECU credit 7 subjects with the diploma.”
  • “I had my credit assessment finished and received 6 Subjects at Charles Sturt Uni.”
  • “CQU will give you 7 subjects credit”
  • “University of Tasmania Conversion program. 53C Bachelor of Paramedic Practice – 10 units after completing the diploma”.

You can also hear directly from Alan Hawke, APC graduate, who used his Diploma to gain entry into ECU. He looked around and found that ECU applied him the most credits:

* Note that Alan Hawke completed the HLT51015 – Diploma of Paramedical Science which has now been superseded by HLT51020 – Diploma of Emergency Health Care
