New figures just released at the end of January 2015 show the London Ambulance Service has more Ambulance job vacancies than anywhere else in England.

A freedom of information request by the Labour Party uncovered 360 positions that need filling straight away. The report went on to say that ambulance trusts in England have over 1,100 ambulance staff vacancies. There are 1171 paramedic and ambulance staff vacancies across England, with 12,137 paramedics nationally.

Earlier this week the London Ambulance Service had to draft in almost 200 paramedical workers from Australia to help fill the gap. Although this import of Australian Paramedical Ambulance talent helped to ease the situation in the short term, Ambulance bosses in the UK said more solutions are needed – quickly.

“We are planning for an increase in the need for paramedics, I think universities are increasing the cohorts of staff they are taking in to become paramedics, but there is between 3 to 4 years lead in time for those staff to become paramedics, so we need an interim solution to support the demand in London.”
– Pauline Cranmer, Operations Manager, London Ambulance Service

Australian Paramedics are welcomed into the English health system. Studying to become a medic or paramedic (via univeristy) has many advantages, and of course one of them is the opportunity to work anywhere in the world. Graduates who possess the Diploma of Emergency Health Care are qualified Advanced Life Support medics and can also find employment opportunities in the UK. There is no need at this stage for graduates to be registered as a paramedic in Australia in order to be offered employment in the UK.
