At the Australian Paramedical college, we are often asked the same question from people who are just starting out their paramedical journey; and that is, “what types of jobs can I do as a paramedic?”.
It’s a great question and one that can’t be answered easily, as there are so many different opportunities for qualified paramedics in Australia.
One of the best ways to learn about the opportunities for paramedics is to review the current job ads that are advertised on the paramedical jobs boards. Most paramedic jobs are advertised online as it is often the easiest way for employers to reach a large volume of candidates.
For the many thousands of people who visit Australian Paramedical College’s website each month, deciding if a career in emergency healthcare sector is right for them is often difficult. So we thought one of the best ways to make an informed decision is to take real-life examples of paramedic jobs and review them. This will hopefully give greater insights as to just what is required to become a successful paramedic in an industry where every day is never ‘groundhog day’.
As we all know, SEEK is the biggest jobs board in Australia and is a good place to start researching the paramedical industry in terms of what jobs are on offer and what are the expectations.
Let’s review this job for a HSE Paramedic.
The company is Sonic Health Plus (www.sonichealthplus.com.au) and they are a clinical services provider. They have a wealth of experience in placing qualified people into clinical services roles across the whole of Australia.
For people who are thinking of commencing a career as a paramedic, we can’t stress enough about the importance of gaining as much knowledge about the industry as you can. This information when coupled with the knowledge gained by undertaking the entry-level paramedics pathway course entitled HLT41120 – Certificate IV in Health Care, will be most helpful in learning the skills required to become successful in your career, will be most helpful in furthering your career as a paramedic.
Due to their continued growth and expansion, Sonic Health are seeking an experienced HSE Paramedic available for an immediate start. The position primarily requires a medic with a strong background in safety.
You must also have a passion for remote work and high quality care to join their Site Services team on a 2 year Fixed Term contract. This is a FIFO position, from Perth, WA, and consists of a two week on, two week off roster. You will be required to work 12 hour shifts and carry out some on-call work.
APC: These types of jobs are quite typical of working in Western Australia because of the remoteness of the state and the opportunities that exist because of it. So be prepared for anything as a paramedic. Working away in remote locations on a roster is very typical, so you had better be prepared for these types of situations.
Your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
To be successful applicants must be flexible, dynamic and work well in a team environment. You will have demonstrated experience working in a similar capacity, excellent organisational skills and exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
APC: these types of character traits are typical of any industry and are essential to the success of the job. How many times have we experienced ad service or come across people who simply don’t care about our welfare? Imagine a paramedic having this type of attitude – we don’t think so. It takes a very special type of person to become a paramedic, not only do they need to be able to learn about the human body and how to treat it in emergencies, but also there is the human side to the job and being positive whilst remaining calm and in control at all times.
You will also require:
Please note only WA based applicants need apply.
As with most jobs advertised these days, there is a bit of preparation work to do before you apply. Discovering as much about the job role as possible is the first step to creating a solid foundation from which to commence an application. In this job, the applicant is expected to have completed their Bachelor of Paramedical Science degree and have some experience as an emergency response paramedic.
What we don’t expect to see in normal paramedic jobs is the requirement for the applicant to have a Cert IV in TAE as well as Confined Space and Working at Heights training and qualifications. From this we can see this job will be in a mining type environment, especially as the advert mentions JHA (Job Hazard Analysis) which are a normal part of everyday mining life.
Another benefit of reviewing this job is the discovery of Sonic Health, who are a major force in the clinical employment field in Western Australia. Just from reviewing this website, it can reveal a wealth of information about the services Sonic Health provides.
