Changing Lives Podcast – Marcelo working as a London Paramedic

Welcome to the Changing Lives podcast, where we share stories of dedicated individuals who are making a difference to the health and well-being of others in need.

A quick summary of Marcel’s experience working in London and studying through APC:

  • “I needed something else in my life. That’s why I decided to enrol to APC”
  • “The APC diploma gave me a lot of background and opening a lot of doors for me in Sydney because I could get on the field and I could work as a paramedic”
  • “I was feeling very confident and I was living the dream and the London opportunity just came up”
  • “London’s a fast paced in-learning job, you get a lot of exposure”
  • “Just follow your dreams, follow your dreams and just be confident”
  • “If you’re dreaming big, you might need to get out of your comfort zone”

Today we have with us Marcelo, a graduate of Australian Paramedical College, who has made the move to the other side of the world to pursue a fast-paced life as a Paramedic in London, the capital city of the UK.

Marcelo describes a little bit about how he went about making his UK dream come true.

” I had the full day of assessment with them in Sydney where basically it was an interview, an ALS scenario, some physical assessment, and also pharmacology tests as well.”

” I had to postpone my uni degree for over six months, but it was well worth it.”

” I needed something else in my life. That’s why I decided to enrol to APC.”

” I started with Certificate IV in Health Care. After that, I did the Diploma of Emergency Health Care. Straight after the Diploma, I applied for university and I got accepted to university UTAS in Sydney. My course lasted two years with university of Tasmania. After that, what I did was just pack my bags and I moved to London.”

” So the APC diploma gave me a lot of background and opening a lot of doors for me in Sydney because I could get on the field and I could work as a paramedic. I was feeling very confident and I was living the dream and the London opportunity just came up.”

” I knew my chance would be like to come to London, where I have this massive exposure, really fast pace in learning and then a couple of years later go back to Australia, apply for an Ambulance service job.”

” It’s [London] a fast paced in-learning job, you get a lot of exposure. If you compare being paramedic in Australia and being a paramedic in the UK, the scope of practice in UK it’s larger so you can do much more for your patients in terms of medications, referrals as a paramedic. So that’s the advantage of the job and the nature of the job as well.”

” Before you come to London make sure you get some exposure, do your placements, get some experience, get some contact with patients and then you come over. I reckon it’s a real life experience, you cannot miss that. You have to go but we know Australia is there, we can come back to Australia and we’re going to come back with much more experience as we came so I’m looking forward.”

” Just follow your dreams, follow your dreams and just be confident you know, ask for help when in need. One step at a time; you cannot become a paramedic tomorrow, it takes time, a couple of years or three years and set the bar high, cause there’s a lot of opportunities out here, if you sure you should come over. So just come over.”

” If you’re dreaming big, you might need to get out of your comfort zone and try to explore the world and get different challenges, get to know different people, and you know Australia is going to be there, it’s not going to change, it’s probably one of the best countries in the world.”
