The beauty about becoming a paramedic in Australia, or indeed the world, is the variety of work it can bring and immense satisfaction.
For example, take this job job for a paramedic that was advertised on the Australian jobs board SEEK.com.au.
The job is for a Paramedic/EMT
(note: there is now a requirement for all paramedics to be registered in Australia)
Onekey resources are currently seeking expressions of interest for experienced Paramedics / ERTs who are looking for a new opportunity in the mining industry.
The successful Paramedic / ERT will have the below:
In return Onekey offers:
As we can see from this advertisement, it is quite specific in terms of what the Onekey’s expectations are for the successful applicant.
Not only are they hoping to attract qualified and registered paramedics into the mining industry, they also stipulate that to be considered for the job, the applicant must be currently working, or have experience in a similar paramedical role in a mining environment. Hoping to attract applicants who are looking for a new challenge is the aim of this advertisement.
However, as the Australian Paramedical College is a learning organisation where pre-hospital emergency health care qualifications can be gained and graduates can find work in the private sector (but not as an Ambulance Paramedic).
One other point to note is, because this job is within the mining sector, there are additional mining-related qualifications that are required. As this job is asking for applications from paramedics who are already employed in the industry (and now must be also registered), it is expected that they would also have a Coal Board Medical and Standard 11 qualification.
In closing, it once again highlights the fact that even though a person may obtain a paramedical qualification (Diploma or Degree), there are additional qualifications that may be required. These qualifications in some cases can be paid for by the employer.
Continued learning and skills-building is a natural part of being successful as an emergency medical response officer in this industry; and for people who realise this, the sky is the limit in terms of career advancement and job satisfaction.
