Here at Australian Paramedical College (APC), we are proud to announce that we are one of the first registered training organisations in Australia to bring the newly updated HLT37525 Certificate III in Pathology (Pathology Collection) to market. This is a significant milestone for pathology training in this country — and a testament to APC’s commitment to being at the forefront of healthcare education.
Whether you’re a prospective student researching your options, an employer looking to upskill your team, or simply wanting to understand what’s changed, this article walks you through everything you need to know about the new qualification, what’s different, and why it matters for your career.
The national training framework regularly reviews qualifications to ensure they reflect the skills and knowledge that employers actually need on the job. The transition from HLT37215 Certificate III in Pathology Collection to HLT37525 Certificate III in Pathology (Pathology Collection) is the result of exactly that kind of review — and the updates are meaningful.
This review was led by HumanAbility, Australia’s Jobs and Skills Council for the health and social assistance sector. Over an 18-month process spanning June 2024 to December 2025, HumanAbility engaged 139 stakeholders across the country — including employers, training providers, peak bodies, and practicing pathology professionals — through site visits, workshops, surveys, and targeted interviews. The qualification and its updated units were endorsed by the Skills Ministers on 19 December 2025 and published on the National Training Register on 22 December 2025.
The review identified clear skills gaps that needed addressing — particularly around digital literacy, employability skills, regional and point-of-care settings, and paediatric collection. The new qualification is the direct result of that work.
Pathology collection is a highly skilled, patient-facing role. Collectors work across hospitals, community collection centres, and specialist labs. They’re trusted with sensitive clinical tasks, they interact with patients from all walks of life, and increasingly they’re expected to navigate digital systems and administrative platforms as part of their day-to-day work. The new qualification recognises this reality and prepares graduates to hit the ground running.
The good news is this: the career outcome is identical. Graduates of HLT37525 Certificate III in Pathology (Pathology Collection) will still be qualified as pathology collectors, eligible to work across the full range of collection settings in Australia and New Zealand. What’s changed is how you get there — and the short answer is: better.
It’s also worth noting that HLT37525 Certificate III in Pathology (Pathology Collection) is not simply an update to one course. As part of the national review, HLT37215 Certificate III in Pathology Collection and HLT37415 Certificate III in Pathology Assistance were merged into a single, unified qualification. The new HLT37525 Certificate III in Pathology (Pathology Collection) contains eight core units and streamed electives, allowing students to specialise in either pathology collection or pathology assistance — giving greater flexibility and a clearer career pathway than ever before.
The old qualification was called the Certificate III in Pathology Collection. The new qualification is called the Certificate III in Pathology (Pathology Collection). This subtle shift reflects a broader scope — recognising that modern pathology collectors do far more than just collect. They prepare, dispatch, interpret, communicate, and use technology. The new name better represents the full scope of the role.
The most significant additions to the new qualification are two units that address real gaps in the previous course
In modern collection centers and labs, digital literacy is no longer optional. Pathology collectors regularly use patient management systems, booking platforms, result-tracking software, and digital records. This new unit formalises that training and ensures graduates are genuinely workplace-ready the moment they finish their studies
This unit replaces the older BSBCUS201 and brings customer service training up to contemporary standards. Pathology collection is an inherently patient-facing role — from greeting nervous patients and explaining procedures, to managing anxiety and de-escalating difficult situations. This updated unit prepares graduates to deliver a genuinely professional, compassionate service every time.
Six of the core clinical units have been updated with new unit codes, reflecting revised content that aligns with modern clinical standards, updated infection control practices, and the latest industry expectations. The foundational skills — venepuncture, specimen collection, ECG, drugs-of-abuse testing, and specimen dispatch — remain exactly as they were. What’s changed is the framework around them, ensuring every skill is taught to the most current standard.

The following lists show all units from both qualifications for easy comparison. Units marked UPDATED retain the same learning outcomes but carry revised unit codes and modernised content. Units marked NEW have been added to the new qualification.
