Clinical Placement

Gain an understanding of how Clinical Placement works at APC in collaboration with our Industry Partners.

Of Australian Paramedical College’s (APC) core courses, Clinical Placement takes place in the HLT51020 – Diploma of Emergency Health Care and HLT41120 – Certificate IV in Health Care.

Placement is crucial to a student’s clinical growth, exposing them to challenging environments beyond the controlled setting of a Clinical Workshop, whether at a sporting event, music festival or even mine site.

Learn how Clinical Placement works at APC, as well as how our established Industry Partners help facilitate these opportunities for our students.

About Clinical Placement

Clinical Placement is required to be completed within a relevant pre/out-of-hospital environment, meaning that you have a range of options to apply for.

How it works

APC offers three core courses which are run over a 12-24 month timeframe. These are the HLT51020 – Diploma of Emergency Health Care, HLT41120 – Certificate IV in Health Care and HLT31120 – Certificate III in Non-Emergency Patient Transport

Each has differing career pathways, so speaking to an APC Course Advisor to match your career aspirations with the right course is imperative to your success at APC.

Once confirmed, you’re ready to enrol into our next intake.

*Please note, if you’re living in New Zealand you have the option to study APC’s HLT51020 – Diploma of Emergency Health Care only. Learn more here.

Complete the relevant theory to book for your Clinical Workshop to ensure preparedness for Clinical Placement.

For students studying the HLT51020 – Diploma of Emergency Health Care, this means completing your first 10 units of theory. If enrolled into the HLT41120 – Certificate IV in Health Care, it is your first 11 units. Whilst it depends on your study load, on average it takes students 12 months to reach this milestone.

At APC, you have the flexibility to conduct your workshop in QLD, NSW, VIC or WA, working alongside our committed team of Trainers and Assessors.

Come face-to-face with your Trainers & Assessors and fellow classmates during a Clinical Workshop and expect to forge life-long friendships. This is conducted over 5- days (Monday – Friday). APC’s Student Success Team will ensure to stay in touch with you to confirm available dates (and your attendance) closer to the date.

For individuals enrolled into the HLT51020 – Diploma of Emergency Health Care,  you’ll be required to complete 2x 5-day Clinical Workshops. If enrolled into the HLT41120 – Certificate IV in Health Care, you will only be required to complete 1x Clinical Workshop.

Get to know APC’s Industry Partners and see which best aligns to you for placement or alternatively, choose and source an external placement provider suited to you.

Please note, Clinical Placement provides you with on-the-job experience, preparing you for your future as a qualified healthcare professional. Choose a provider that aligns with your chosen career pathway to learn as much as possible before graduating!*

*Students must be deemed satisfactory in the relevant online theory and Clinical Workshop/s (only held in Australia) before commencing Clinical Placement in Australia or New Zealand.

Power through partnerships

APC has partnered with 15+ established organisations across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand who take our students on for Clinical Placement, and often provide employment opportunities as well following graduation.

Placement success

Meet Ashleigh, an APC student who studied the HLT51015 – Diploma of Paramedical Science (since superseded by the HLT51020 – Diploma of Emergency Health Care).

Ashleigh signed up for APC due to the convenience it offered her, as opposed to studying a bachelor degree at university. It was self-paced and allowed her to continue working full-time in a job that she loved.

Having already completed Clinical Placement before attending her Clinical Workshop 2, she reflects on her time with SA Ambulance, sharing, “You really get the opportunity to put everything that you have learned into practice“.

Frequently asked questions

Students have the luxury of choice whilst enrolled at APC, and that flows through into their Clinical Placement.

You can choose to complete your Clinical Placement through APC’s Industry Partners and current recruiters (listed on your student portal once enrolled), but you also have the option to source another placement provider yourself should you wish for a different opportunity.

If you choose to enroll into APC’s HLT51020 – Diploma of Emergency Health Care, you’ll be required to complete 160 hours of placement, broken down into 40 and 120-hour blocks.

APC is more than happy to discuss pathways for students to take to achieve RPL or CT’s on their course. You can learn more about these here

Please note that no applications can be provided, or assessed for Clinical Placement until you have attended, and been deemed satisfactory at the relevant Clinical Workshop/s.

Students must be assessed by an APC Trainer and Assessor before commencing Clinical Placement, meaning you are unable to complete your placement beforehand.

This is to ensure that you are prepared and ready to take on treating patients.

Once enrolled at APC, your Clinical Placement module provides full transparency as to how, what, when, where and who to contact for Clinical Placement.

This module is provided to you upon enrolment meaning that you have all the information you need to be successful from the very start.

APC is always looking to onboard new Industry Partners to support our students.

If your workplace is interested and looking to get onboard, you can reach out here and we’ll be in touch shortly afterwards.
