Event Medic Jobs – What to expect

With the right qualifications you can become an Event Medic sooner than you think.

The entry-level first responder paramedical qualification is the  HLT41120 – Certificate IV in Health Care. This is a 12-18 month course to prepare you for life as an event medic. From there, you can develop your training and move up to the HLT51020 – Diploma of Paramedical Science, opening up further paramedic job opportunities in the private sector.

Event medics can work at many different events and provide a range of services. The role helps reassure spectators and participants alike just by being on-site and when necessary administer medical care and even save lives.

Event Medics provide more than “first aid”. They are licensed to use a wide range of medications in the field and are trained to manage a range of medical scenarios – from basic first aid to complex clinical interventions. Event medics will therefore manage many medical conditions on-site which reduce the number of people being transported to the hospital for medical attention.

Event medic jobs can include:

  • Sporting events including obstacle courses and fun runs
  • Community fairs and festivals
  • Concerts, dance and music festivals
  • Exhibitions, conferences
  • Parades
  • Agricultural Shows
  • Government initiatives
  • Commemorative services
  • Motorsports and racing
  • Horse jumping/racing
  • Charity events, gala dinners and balls
  • Filming movies and TV shows
  • State emergency call outs
  • School fetes, fairs and sports carnivals

Injuries/illnesses you will encounter as an event medic

As an event medic anything can happen. You may provide assistance to a wide range of injuries or illnesses. Anything from blisters, heat exhaustion or fatigue, to anaphylaxis but you may also have to deal with more serious cases like full cardiac arrest, childbirth or major traumas.

Crowd numbers:

This varies event to event. For example, some sporting events can have up to 100,000 people in attendance (MCG).

How to become an Event Medic

Get your foot in the door as an event medic by training with the Australian Paramedical College. APC offers first responder qualifications with accredited paramedical pathway courses.  HLT41120 – Certificate IV in Health Care & HLT51020 – Diploma of Paramedical Science
