Top Tips for Mums Who Are Studying to Become A Paramedic

Making the decision to return to study is always a tough one, although when you’re a mum it can be even more challenging. We often get enquiry calls from mum’s who are ready to start studying in preparation for their return to the workplace.

Whilst their passion for health care is evident, many mothers are reluctant to focus on themselves for a little while. When you’re a Mum you want to ensure you are with your little one(s) every step of the way. You don’t want to miss any milestone no matter how big or small, and studying almost seems like it will get in the way.

We’re here to tell you that it won’t. We want to show you how many benefits there are to studying as a mum and how rewarding a career as a Paramedic or medic in the private sector can be.

Benefits of studying paramedicine as a mum

Whilst it can seem daunting, studies have shown that mum’s who are engaged in study or work are actually happier and healthier than their non-working counterparts. Your children over time (and when they’re ready0, will also benefit from this, learning the value of commitment, dedication and goal setting.

Here are our top 5 tips for Mums, or Dad’s, who study

  1. Being organised
Being organised for study is completely different than organising your children for the day. When setting out time to study, make sure your children are occupied or being looked after by someone else to avoid interruption. You will get more done if you dedicate a small amount of uninterrupted time to study, rather than think you can study while watching your two year old. The other thing to take note of is setting realistic goals for assignment submission to increase productivity. Keep in mind though, if you need more time it’s no issue, our courses are self-paced and we understand that sometimes life gets in the way.
  2. Look for support
Having support from your partner, family and/or friends is vital to your success as a studying Mum. Simple things like keeping the kids occupied while you fit in 1 hour of study, or watching them while you complete some work experience hours, can make your life a whole lot easier.
  3. Be open and honest with your trainers and support staff
Most of our trainers and student success are parents as well, so they completely understand the situation you are in. They know that juggling a family, work and study can be hard, so they will aim to support you wherever they can. They genuinely want you to succeed.
  4. Have self discipline
There are only 24 hours in a day, so don’t waste it. Set a time limit for catch up coffee’s with your friends and people who support your decision to study. Set strict time limits for your social media use every day, because as well all know – this can be a time trap and before you know it, hours have passed watching meaningless videos and reading irrelevant content.
  5. Remember to take time out
Make the most of your time off with your family. Be good to yourself and take the opportunity to zone out, relax and enjoy life. Remember, you can only go one hundred miles per hour for so long before you burn out. Make sure you have a balance between your study and life.
