Too Late To Become a Paramedic? We Say No

Too Late To Become a Paramedic? We Say No

An interview with our older APC students – Is It Too Late To Become a Paramedic?

Is it ever too late to change careers? This is a question each one of us will ask ourselves at somepoint in our life. For some of our paramedical students – this has been a burning question.

In an industry where emotional intelligence and highly tuned conversational skills is essential skill, emergency medical response is highly suited for people who have a rich resume of life experience.

Our paramedical students tell us in their own words, how they feel about this new chapter of their lives training towards a new career pathway.

“There is a lot to absorb and there’s just been times where I’ve just gone, I don’t know how I’m going to remember all this. But the practical has been really helpful”

“I guess I felt my age was a bit of a barrier… I’m twice the average age of the course participants, but sometimes it feels like I have a bit of life experiences”

“I think you’re never too old to study. And yeah, I think I just got to a point, I just needed a little bit of something else in life.”

“I took on a different direction for some reason, but my passion’s always kind of been with healthcare. I was like, I know I’m going to be older, but it’s never too late to start.”

“The more you go over it, the more you … The penny drops and you start to see the system in it”

“Before I get any older, I thought I might as well take the plunge and go and pursue my dream.”

“I would say that the age isn’t a barrier. It’s an asset really. I think the life experience you have you can bring to the job”.

“Probably the most interesting thing that struck me is age isn’t a barrier in Australia, it really isn’t”

“This is a new challenge for me, and I haven’t looked back”.

“I was amazed that, how much easier it was studying now as opposed to when I was a youngster.”

“Don’t hesitate. Do it.”

“I thought if I don’t do it, I’ll regret it for the rest of my life. I just took the jump, took the plunge.”

“So yeah, I took it on, and I’ve loved every minute of it.”

“To any older person who’s looking for something to do, just to give back or to just feel rewarded or feel needed, go out there, because I promise you in doing it, somebody else is going to benefit.”
